Lesson plan
Learning objectives
By the end of this lesson students
should have:
- Created a Padlet wall
containing a variety of information about an Australian explorer in
collaboration with other students.
- Included a variety of
information types, such as, articles, photographs, video clips, journals and
maps.
- Made brief comments on each
item in their collection explaining what it is.
- Demonstrated safe and
ethical use of the internet while creating their Padlet wall.
Prior knowledge
Students need to be familiar with
practices for safe and ethical use of the internet.
Prior to commencing this lesson students should have been engaging in the History unit as provided in the teacher information or another Australian History unit. They will need to be familiar with historical words, particularly in relation to European colonisation of Australia.
Students should be familiar with the first fleet, penal colonies and exploration of Australia.

introduction - explicit teaching
Explain to students that they will be
preparing a Padlet wall containing items about an Australian explorer. They will write a sentence or two explaining
their item when they attach it to the Padlet.
At the end of the lesson they will explain the items that they have added
to the wall to their group members.
WALT – Use Padlet to create a collection of items in relation to an Australian explorer.
WILF – Safe use of the internet to locate items and adding them to Padlet with a brief explanation.
Students should work in groups of 4 to 5 and have a laptop each. Each group is to choose, or be allocated, one of Australian explorers to research. The following list are suggestions:
One student in each group should create a new wall by going into “My Padlet” and clicking on the “+”. On the right hand side of there is a panel, choose “modify wall” and add the name of the explorer the group is to research to the title. The link should be shared with the other group members who are not all able to work on the wall at the same time. The teacher is to create a sample wall to model this process.
I have provided an example Padlet wall here with a few useful websites. You can share this wall with your students to provide them with a starting point for their research.
Show students how to add items to their Padlet:

Show students how to add items to their Padlet:
- Find the item they would
like to use;
- Copy the url;
- Double click anywhere on
the Padlet wall;
- Type in the title, a short
description and add the hyperlink by clicking on the picture of the chain and
pasting the url in.
- Files saved to the computer
can also be uploaded by choosing the upload button instead of the hyperlink
button.
guided instruction
Have the students talk you through
searching and choosing an item. Then the
item should be added to the sample wall you have created. This may need to be demonstrated a few times,
however students usually find Padlet very simple to use.
Explain to students that they will need to work together to find items about their explorer and add them to their wall to ensure that they end up with lots of information.

collaborative and independent work
Students are to seek items on the
internet and assess whether they provide useful information about their
explorers. They are to add these items
to their groups Padlet wall with a brief description of the item. Students should discuss what they are doing
with one another to avoid doubling up on information and to ensure that they
have different types of items on their wall.
Each student should add a minimum of 3 items to their groups Padlet wall.
Each student should add a minimum of 3 items to their groups Padlet wall.
CONCLUSION
To complete the lesson
students should present the items that they added to the wall to their other
group members. They should explain what
their item is and what information it gave them about their chosen explorer.
FUTURE LESSON IDEAS
Each group can practise and present
their Padlet wall as an oral presentation.
Padlet has a presentation mode which can assist with the presentation of
their talk.
Students can use the information from their Padlet wall to write an information report or imaginative narrative about the explorer they researched.
